MDRT Special Event: What every financial advisor must know about cybersecurity compliance

May 9, 2022 12:00pm ‐ May 9, 2022 1:00pm

Identification: web220509

Join James Harrison, the founder and CEO of the cybersecurity company INVISUS, to learn what a good cybersecurity and compliance plan looks like and how you can realistically stay compliant and protect client data without being a cybersecurity expert.

Fast-growing cyber threats put you, your firm and your clients at risk. Even a small data breach can cost you your reputation and result in big financial damages, including substantial remediation costs and steep fines and penalties. With regulators becoming increasingly aggressive with lax cybersecurity practices, it’s vital that every financial advisor has a cybersecurity plan that meets the latest compliance requirements and proactively protects their data and their clients’. In this presentation, Harrison shares the current cybersecurity requirements from the SEC, FINRA and state agencies, what a good cybersecurity plan looks like for sole proprietors and small firms, and what you can reasonably do right now to meet current and new requirements.

The discussion will be moderated by 15-year MDRT member Ted Rusinoff. There will be a live Q&A session after the presentation.

Breaking down the SECURE 2.0 Act: Minor updates with major benefits

Feb 13, 2023 1:00pm ‐ Feb 13, 2023 2:00pm

Identification: web230213

Join MDRT member Dave Alison, CFP, EA, for a discussion of the new Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) 2.0 Act and what it means for you and your clients. This law overlays the original SECURE Act signed in 2019, which changed the game for retirement-planning businesses and anyone accumulating money in pre-tax retirement accounts. It eliminated one primary provision allowing the individual who inherits a retirement account to stretch out the distributions. The new law was passed in 2022 and includes several minor updates, such as extending the required minimum distribution (RMD) age, reducing penalties for missing an RMD, allowing employer matching to be allocated to a Roth account, increasing contributions to a QLAC, increasing retirement plan catch-up contributions in 2025, creating Roth SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA options and allowing for an IRA charitable rollover to a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.

The discussion will be moderated by 13-year MDRT member Timothy D. Clairmont, CFP, MSFS. There will be a live Q&A session after the presentation.

Elevate and accelerate: What the MDRT Academy can do for you

Mar 13, 2023 1:00pm ‐ Mar 13, 2023 2:00pm

Identification: web230313

Join MDRT members Ryan J. Pinney, LACP, and Tom E. Sunny, CFP, RICP, for a panel discussion about the MDRT Academy and how it could help you get to the next level in your career — and ultimately hasten your journey toward MDRT qualification.

The MDRT Academy is an association founded for one purpose: helping financial advisors reach MDRT. Since 2017, it’s done just that, as thousands of advisors have utilized the Academy’s app and website to learn how to advise clients, market and manage their business, and develop themselves into more whole, balanced people.

Sunny, a New York Life agent, is one such advisor. His membership in the MDRT Academy set him up to qualify for MDRT in 2021, and he has since achieved Court of the Table qualification. He will share his experience as an Academy member as well as ideas, he learned that he still utilizes in his work today.

After enrolling five of his advisors in the MDRT Academy, Pinney, an independent advisor, has become an advocate for what this association has to offer advisors looking to achieve more. He has seen first-hand how Academy membership has helped his employees become more efficient and effective and will share why he thinks joining the association is “worth it.”

The discussion will be moderated by eight-year MDRT member Julianne Hertel, CLTC, also an agent with New York Life. There will be a live Q&A session after the presentation.
